Foiling Rote
Rote is not just a paradise for surfers, in recent years, Rote has also been discovered as one of the best places in Indonesia (or the world) for foiling. Tow foiling, wingfoiling, prone surf foiling and most recently, using a Foildrive, all forms can be done right outside of Wavehaven.
Epic & empty waves
Foiling Rote
Foiling has become increasingly popular with surfers as a great way to get away from crowded surf spots and get epic, long rides.
Squeelers (right in front of Wavehaven) has become the go-to foil spot for people getting into the sport of prone surfing and more recently using a Foildrive. Accessible for all levels, as long as there is about 1.3 meter of tide height over the reef, which usually means mid-to-high tide. Take-offs for prone foiling can be done in the white water or on the green part of the waves. People using a Foildrive at Squeelers (as we do) should make sure they are not in the way of surfers and enter a wave from either the left or the right hand side, once they know there is not a surfer on the same wave. Rides are usually between 150 to 250 meters. The wave reforms 2 or 3 times so there’s plenty of open wave to play with.
Tow-Foiling Indonesia
The Bomby is also in front of Wavehaven but further past Squeelers. Bomby breaks best on low tides and is accessed by Foildrive, boat or jetski. SUP foilers and stand up paddle boarders can do the paddle in about 10 minutes.
Epic rides with long open walls of 200 to 400 meters can be had here. Bomby is not ideal for prone foiling as the take off spot shifts a bit.

Long empty waves
There are numerous offshore reefs to be found in Rote, where noone ever surfs, so there’s no need to bother surfers, or paddle boarders when you go on a foiling holiday here in Rote, Indonesia.
In the normal Rote surf season (March to November) the waves are very consistent, barely ever being smaller than chest height and at times up to 4 x overhead. There are always options to choose from.
Foiling rules:
Do NOT foil (wingfoil, tow or Foildrive) near surfers. Keep a safe distance, don’t create a wake that bothers surfers.
You cannot do any foiling at T-Land. Anyone using a Foildrive at Squeelers should make sure they are never in the way of surfers and always enter a wave from either the left or the right hand side, once they know there is not a surfer on the same wave. Never drive your foil through the line-up.
There are enough empty spots at any given time that there is no need to be near surfers. Using a Foildrive in Rote particularly, you are able to go on the higher tide when the surfers leave and then enjoy the whole break to yourself.
